Population of Waikiki

The inhabitants of Waikiki date back to early Polynesian immigrants that dwelled in the islands of Waikiki. The entire of the Hawaiian Islands was populated for a long time with these migrants and the earliest evidence of their presence dates back to about 4 th century. It was not however till contact with the European travelers that the place was recognized as a geographical entity of distinct language, culture and population.

 
 

Thus it was the advent of the British that gave Hawaiian island including the large island of Oahu on which the Waikiki neighborhood is situated an identity with the world. The language of Hawaii got a script after the landing to the British's on the soil and from their began the history of the people of Waikiki and Hawaii.

The population remained isolated for a long time and thus initially it was inhabited by strictly Polynesians.

Today Hawaii and so Waikiki are an abode to Hawaiians of all possible descents and religions and the most prominent of these are the Americans, British, Scottish and Polynesian descendants that are now all collectively called as the natives of Hawaii. The population of Waikiki according to the census is nineteen thousand seven hundred and twenty and these are the permanent residents of the area.

Amongst the fluctuating population of Waikiki are thousands of visitors that are although not permanent members of the area however they form part of the spirit of Waikiki and keep the tourism industry alive. The Average visitors per day in Waikiki are about 72,000 people and these form the backbone of economy of the area.
